Key Role Description

Leads, guides and directs the Process Controls Engineering group in the day-to-day engineering support of plant-wide process control systems and associated applications, including, but not limited to, distributed regulatory control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), process history data systems, and advanced process control (APC) applications. Areas of responsibilities also include support for the control portion of refinery projects and day-to-day technical support to various other departments within the organization including process engineering, reliability, operations, instrument maintenance, and process safety management.

Role Specific Competencies

Technical Knowledge - demonstrates the specific skills necessary for the assignments, understands the background and points of leverage to be effective in the role.

Leads the team that:

  • Responds to the day-to-day needs of the plant, particularly where those needs are impacted by the process control or process data history systems.
  • Assesses existing process control schemes for their relevance and application as well as assessing the adequacy of specific applications. Reviewing existing data (including lab analysis) to see if more research and information need to be collated;
  • Designs, installs and commissions new closed-loop or open-loop monitoring applications, as well as troubleshooting existing applications when problems or questions arise.
  • Applies the principles of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, fractionation, and kinetics to troubleshoot, evaluate and design effective control schemes.
  • Maintains and/or develops reports, flow diagrams and charts that have data feeds either directly from the process control systems or via the enterprise-wide process data historian.

* Manages the cost and time constraints of the process control related portion of projects, whether those project are being managed by others or are being managed by the Process Controls group.
* Responsible for relationship and cost of contractors, consultants, and vendors.
* Works closely with process engineers, operations and optimization to monitor and improve the safety, reliability, efficiency, and utilization of the operating refinery.
* Supports the refinery to ensure that quality and reliability processes and practices are automated and data driven.
* Makes observations and takes measurements directly, as well as collecting and interpreting data from the other technical and operating staff involved.
* Ensures that all aspects of an operation or process meet specified cyber-security requirements.
* Works closely with other department leaders to continuously improve the safety, reliability, and profitability of Monroe Energy.

Experience and Skills

Education, Experience, and Skill Requirements

* Preferably Bachelor of Science Chemical Engineering with strong background in process controls, instrument engineering, advanced process controls, and online analyzers.
* Minimum of 15 years’ experience in Petroleum Refining Industry or other similar continuous critical process industry.
* Proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
* Demonstrated proficiency in all of Role Specific Competencies.
